BRINGING IN THE SHEAVES

I’m quite proud of this week’s Angelus News column, in which I make a connection between David Cronenberg’s 1987 body-horror movie The Fly and today’s horrifying movement toward “designer babies.” Happy Halloween.

I’ve been in Philadelphia most of the week, drinking in the art, the grand old buildings of brick and stone, the autumn foliage and a whole bunch else that will time to process.

One highlight was a trip to Maple Farm in Chestnut Hill, which was flowing over with pumpkins, squash, Indian corn, apple cider doughnuts, home-made jams, jellies, pickles, and candies, bright bouquets, fresh produce…my friend and I took advantage of the pick-your-own zinnias feature which, because it’s late in the season, were 10 bucks for a hundred blooms!

I just read your article about The Fly and today’s genetic selection process….
Dear Lord, save us! You and You alone create, for Your good purposes!! Protect us from our desire for ” perfection” and help us see the beauty in our individuality and brokenness!! You made a way for us to seek You! In our imperfections, we lean into You, Lord!!

Thanks so much, Robin–my friend and I picked the zinnias last Wed. and they’re still going strong! I have a bouquet in my bedroom and a vase in the bathroom–such a joy…and you are so right, Lord save us. I often am kind of oblivious to certain things that are going on in the world, but this particular trend…I mean we are reaching some kind of limit/jumping-off point. Still, “Upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Words to cling to…along of course, with flowers….

Such a beautiful photo of you. I miss fall. 85 degrees here in LA.

Oh Diane, you’re too kind–I had gotten up at 2 am to catch a 5 am flight to Philly from Tucson so felt like DWO (Death Warmed Over). But those zinnias perked me right up–and yes, I have treasured the autumn foliage and crisp (38 degrees this morning) air! Good to know you’re holding the fort in LA…

Your essay on Cronenberg’s film The Fly, brought to mind 1997 film Gattaca, where naturally conceived humans are considered invalid next to genetically engineered humans. The film effectively addresses the factor of the human spirit and it’s ability to overcome adversity. The film portrays a frightenly controlled future where daily DNA checks direct the course of one’s life and free will is non-existent. Thank you for the tie in, but any attempt to meddle in human reproduction seems like a horror film to me.

Thanks, Glen, right; I was trying to point up the contrast between the utterly grotesque reality and the homogenized branding–in this case a flower (orchid)–with which genetic engineering is presented…The Fly with its over-the-top special effects seemed particularly apt. On the other hand, I started to watch Gattaca at one point and simply couldn’t stomach it…so your own point is well-taken. It’s the imposed control and lack of free will that are the most horrifying prospects of all…
