WEEKLY NEWSLETTER JUNE 6, 2025

My Angelus arts and culture column this week is on one of my (many) soul-mates: the very strange Hans Christian Andersen:

The truly brutal summer heat hasn’t yet quite kicked in here in the Sonoran Desert…though my front yard is overgrown with trees and agaves and is actually cooler than outside the “enclosure” as I’ve come to think of it, leading my monastic little life as I do.

I’ve taken to having my morning prayer outside, on the glider, with my candle and incense, accompanied by the dawn chorus of my beloved birds. There are a pair of resident cardinals, tons of mourning doves, house finches, goldfinches, and white-throated sparrows, I spotted a vermilion flycatcher in the back yard last week–oh, hummingbirds, of course–and a Gila woodpecker (these also abound, very comforting to hear them hammering away at the telephone pole) recently performed his ablutions in the birdbath…

Anyway, this, to me, is the “abundance” and “prosperity” people natter on about.

My next Writing Workshop starts two weeks from tomorrow. There is one slot left and if it isn’t filled, so be it! I have a Plan B, as ideally to my mind there would be six.

I spoke to my peope at Kylemore Abbey the other day–our Memoir Writing Workshop in early September is full to overflowing so I’m stoked about that, too.

Meanwhile, I am listening to concert music, re-reading some classics of Western literature, along with analyses, perusing painters, and attending usually dally noon Mass at Sts. Peter and Paul as, though the church isn’t open all day, they let us stay after and pray for as long as we want.

BLESSED PENTECOST!!! Always a long time coming…and a beautifully fitting culmination of the Easter season.

Just love the birds of summer and the idea of your cool enclosure.

I read the Angelus arts & culture article on HCA. I’d beg my grandmother to tell me the “Little Match Girl” story over and over before going to sleep when visiting her. I read the story dozens of times in my faded blue hardcover edition of HCA’s fairy tales. I grew up in a temperate climate but suffered from asthma. Being extinguished like a match seemed imminent every winter and spring. Thus, I guess, the fascination with the pathos of HCA’s stories. His story, as you recounted, brought a wistful smile. 🙂

Lovely to meet another HCA devotee, Tish! These stories in childhood indeed take hold–deep within…Pathos, abandonment, loss…there’s another one about a Christmas tree and how it’s thoughtlessly tossed aside (of course) after Christmas (kind of like Christ, come to think of it) that is haunting…Anyway, I hope your asthma is under control as an adult and long may our beloved Hans live in the minds and hearts of children everywhere. There’s a statue of him in Central Park in NYC…
