WEEKLY NEWSLETTER MAY 16, 2025

In this week’s Angelus News column, I write about Father Donald Haggerty’s new book: The Hour of Testing:: Spiritual Depth and Insight in a Time of Ecclesial Uncertainty. Interesting that the book’s publication coincided almost exactly with the election of our new Pope. Let’s all pray for him!

Meanwhile, head over to my Substack: DESIRE LINES: Books, Culture, Art where I post 2-3 times weekly.

Also meanwhile, the cacti in Tucson are bursting into their achingly beautiful and short-lived bloom.

Finally, all you budding writers, don’t miss this incredible opportunity for a Summer Writing Workshop! Should be fun and I’d love to have you.

Heather, thank you for your review of Fr. Haggerty’s new book. I read the columns he writes in The Catholic Thing. This makes me even more aware than I already am of the sad state of our Church and the need to pray and sacrifice even more for it. I am praying Leo XIV will bring the change that is so needed. I am not a writer and I don’t do substacks, but I follow your Weekly Newsletters. I love the way you write. It is so honest.

Hi Elizabeth, ha ha I’m so out of it I didn’t even know of The Catholic Thing–I put Fr. Haggerty into its search engine and nothing came up but maybe the search engine isn’t working properly…Anyway, he writes so beautifully and deepy about the value of prayer, and to my mind, that’s the thing to focus on, rather than the state of the Church…which in her earthly pilgrimage will always be beleaguered. I love G.K. Chesterton’s famous response to the question posed by a newspaper during his time, What’s Wrong with the World? Chesterton replied, “I am.” In today’s Gospel, Jesus says, Ask anything in my name and I will grant it to you. My prayer is always to help me think of someone else rather than myself. A VERY TALL ORDER! On we go, on our knees before the tabernacle…Thank you, as always, for your support.

Thank you for the flower pictures! They don’t make me homesick like your Los Angeles flowers used to, but I love them just as much. Those blinding yellows!

Also, I appreciate your book recommendations and I keep a list. But by the time I read one, I’ve lost the opportunity to respond to your original post. So let me say here: THANK YOU for mentioning All The Beauty In The World a while back. I drank it in like water when I’m thirsty.

Fantastic, Betsy–yes, All the Beauty in the World is a real keeper. I purchased a global membership at the Met (for people who live more than 200 miles away) last tiime I was in NYC, and can’t wait to brush it off when I’m back for a week mid-September–thanks for being such a loyal follower all these years. And yes, the Tucson cacti are breathtaking–maybe all the more so because they last such a short time…

Great column, as usual. Love your cactus blooms and Fr. Don. Could Rome actually become the seat of Anti-Christ. Makes me shudder. Praying for our new Pope, always. Really what else can we do? Oh yes, cling to the Eucharist, the Rosary and our sweet Jesus.
