THE HOLLY AND THE IVY: A 50s CHRISTMAS MOVIE

Here’s how this week’s arts and culture column begins:

A new book, out this month from Foster Hirsch, is called “Hollywood and the Movies of the Fifties: The Collapse of the Studio System, the Thrill of Cinerama, and the Invasion of the Ultimate Body Snatcher — Television” (Knopf, $38.68).

Finally, finally: I’m ahead of the curve.

We share taste in movies! Though actually the 50’s are a little too modern for me, I prefer silents to 1940’s. But there are definitely good ones from that decade too. Night of the Hunter is absolutely fascinating, and Bette Davis is at her most Betteness in All About Eve! I haven’t seen The Holly and the Ivy but it sounds like something I would like to see. I just saw Shane at your recommendation and was great too. Have you seen 12 Angry Men with Henry Fonda? And The Third Man with Orson Welles? A couple of great movies I saw this year.
I am so glad to hear you are a Benedictine Oblate! May God richly bless you in this new endeavor.

I love it when you tell of movies to watch, books to read, places to go. Though I can’t travel, l always watch the movies, love them, and try to get the books. I am currently reading, “The Passion of the Infant Christ”, by Caryll Houselander. Have you read that yet?
