MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A GARDEN VIDEO

My dear, insanely multi-talented friend Lisa Marr who, along with her life partner Paolo Davanzo, runs the Echo Park Film Center (EPFC), put this video together with footage I shot on my iphone and with a grant from the AARP.  I am actually NOT retired, thank you, though am thrilled to be part of this as I call it OLD PEOPLE’S project.

Thank you so much, Lisa!

As you may or may not know, I wrote a book about the garden called  HARROWED. You can buy it HERE.

Lovely garden Heather! And your sharing was much appreciated.

I live in a city in northern Virginia and turned my front yard into a native plant garden. I don’t have any HOA here, so was free to plant whatever I wanted. I have had my yard certified as a natural wildlife center even though it is such a small piece of property. It has been a source of wonder for me and the people who happen to walk by it. Some people tell me that they love my yard, and some neighbors make a special trip just to see it in it’s summer bloom.

I really enjoy your posts 🥰

    Kathy

  2. Gorgeous garden and vlog, Heather! And, FWIW, “Harrowed” was one of my favorite reads this past year — a voice of sanity in an otherwise insane world. Merry Christmas to you, as well. Praying for your health and safety.

  3. Merry Christmas Heather! You gave me yet another reason to read the Moviegoer, it’s been on my ‘must read’ list for too long! – Dave

Thank you all so much! Yes Dave, “The Moviegoer” is definitely worth a read…Thanks for reading “Harrowed,” Bill–so glad you liked it! And Kathy, kudos on your northern Virginia garden…how beautiful that it draws people and of course enhances the neighborhood…a form of .human pollination…

  5. Thank you for sharing this, Heather, it’s wonderful! You are an artist in so many ways, and I thank you for sharing all your gifts with us. Merry Christmas!

Just watched the video/audio tour of your garden: what peace and beauty. I recognized the arbor, chair and pea gravel paths from your book, which I finished reading a week or so ago. You did it again: another beautiful book full of wisdom and gratitude, which you pass on so well to your readers. Thank you.
Reminds me that my fairly simple life has an abundance of blessings, lots of them right under my nose and in my own neighborhood! Also makes me want to rush out and work in my yard, but unfortunately it’s covered with snowdrifts right now and with single digit temperatures.. It will probably be 3 or 4 months before the first signs of springs, then watch out. In the meantime, I try to stay at least somewhat in the present nowadays.
At 74, time is passing quickly enough for me. I thought of you and your stay as writer-in-residence at St. Gertrude’s Monastery when I was watching an episode of Idaho Experience on PBS a few nights ago. They showed Ernest Hemingway’s last residence in Sun Valley, Idaho. The house sits on a hill and the views are spectacular. Enclosed in endless acres of forest, mountains in the distance, complete with freely roaming wildlife, what a perfect sanctuary it would be. They have created a writer-in-residence apartment in the house. Thought you might like to check it out sometime to see another beautiful part of Idaho. Hope you keep writing and inspiring and gardening and that you have a Happy 2021. Carol from Idaho.

Carol, thanks so much for this beautiful note–I fell in love with Idaho, or the parts I saw, which were Cottonwood and Boise…would love to go back one day. Have met some people who summer in Sun Valley–looks absolutely gorgeous and I pray to hope to make it there one day…meanwhile, yes, the little daily chores, epiphanies, moments…Happy New Year to you.
