This would make a great gift for newly-retired parents, live-at-home adult children who are unsure of their next move, lapsed or pissed-off Catholics, seekers of all stripes, and anyone whose deepest wish is to pursue an artistic vocation but is 1) terrified of not making enough money, 2) failing, 3) laboring under the misapprehension that to allow ourselves the life that we’re made for is an indulgent pipe dream.

And an introductory video!

  1. Hello Heather, just listened to you talking about desire lines. Its so nice to hear you talk, I love your writing and I have just re-re-read your book notes on womanhood. It floors me each time! I’m the probation officer from Cumbria UK and I have commented on your posts before.
I have just ordered your book Stripped and looking forward to that read.
I just want you to know how much you keep me going and I use a lot of your stuff in various ways to support my work. You are like the icing on the cake for a lot of material I use and its really helpful.
Its not always easy, so many of the people I work with don’t read, didn’t finish school and have low attention spans. Its such a challenge. But nowhere near the challenge of escaping addiction.
I love listening to your comments on art too, I started drawing a few years back, nothing serious, just felt this urge to do something I had not done since I left school many years ago. I’m not very good and given the lack of time – with work and family stuff – its a slow process in learning the craft. But I do, at times enjoy it. I sometimes ask the lord to take it away, it serves no purpose, takes valuable time from me when I could be reading, but then it creeps back into my life. I love trying to draw the human form and then trying to re-imagine the stations of the cross and the passions scenes. That’s the focus, and it wont go away, so I guess its come from God.
Anyway, just wanted to share this with you. I hope you are well and please keep writing.
    take care
    Chris

Chris, lovely to hear from you. I’m so glad you find my work useful or helpful in any way! I can’t agree with you, however, that your drawing “serves no purpose!” I could easily say that about my writing…giving expression to our creativity, taking the time to learn a craft, “trying to draw the human form and then trying to re-imagine the stations of the cross and the passions scenes”…how beautiful. The whole thrust of my Desire Lines Workshop is that if we spent more time drawing, writing, or learning to be an insurance adjustor if that’s our vocation, the less time we’d spend arguing, accusing, hating ourselves and each other…the less susceptible we’d be to ideologies of various kinds and to addiction…the poverty of the people you work with is heartbreaking–a poverty of literacy, imagination, story, connection…so the work you do in accompanying them is invaluable. Many thanks for reading…
