“It’s a living human, it knows all of my life and gives me wonderful advice. I would like to be buried at its feet.”
–Paul Cézanne, of a “noble silver olive tree,” from The Artist In His Studio, text and photographs by Alexander Liberman
“Love is poetry, too…We are love, we are made of love. How can we live otherwise? That is why I now speak of color-love and no longer color-ight. Color-love without theories–it does not deceive.”
–Marc Chagall, quoted in The Artist In His Studio, text and photographs by Alexander Liberman
yes!! Reminds me of a homily struck me recently: that from a seed a tree grew that would become a tree of death, planks that would be used for crucifixions. And then it was transformed into the tree of life, the means to our salvation.
I liked it because it resonated with my Irish-bred mid-1990s love for the idea of supernaturalized inanimate objects. I loved the thought that in Ireland the stones could talk, that there was holy ground, or that faeries inhabited ancient groves. And here I could partake again by imagining the path of this seed that became a cross that became THE Cross and how happy it must've felt to be used for good instead of evil.
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
1 Peter 2:24
The mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees in the fields will clap their hands. Isaiah 55:12
I'm reading shirt of flame for the second time to focus in again on the parts I missed or didn't see.it's really lovely the way Heather has linked her life to that of St.Therese. My name is Therese but i could never understand what St.Theresr was about. Now Im praying to her and seeing so much of my life reflected in her struggle.Thank you Heather for sharing your life so honestly and for not stopping short with knowledge but going on to the understanding of heart.
